Cowboy Bebop takes place in the year of 2071, in which the entire Solar System is made accessible and liveable (primarily Mars and the moons of Jupiter) following the explosion of an experimental hyperspace gateway in 2022, which greatly damages Earth as a result. The anime focuses on a group of bounty hunters who live aboard the Bebop spaceship. There’s Spike Spiegel, a lanky and sarcastic individual with a dark past and pension for smoking; Jet Black, an ex-ISSP officer and the owner of the Bebop; Faye Valentine, a femme fatale with a mysterious past and a gambling addiction; Ein, a purebred Welsh Corgi with highly enhanced intelligence due to his prior scientist captors; and finally Ed, a young tomboy computer-genius-hacker who enjoys rolling around a lot.
A greatly character driven drama, the primary focus is on Spike Spiegel, as he struggles with leaving behind his past in the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, in which he worked with his former partner, Vicious, and through Vicious met the accidental love of his life: Julia. Each character in Bebop comes to terms with their own troubled past in some shape or form, making Cowboy Bebop a truly unique anime in its genre, one of superb and above-average story-telling accompanied with equally intriguing characters. The fact that the viewer grows to care for these characters in a mere 26-episode span is phenomenal, and Bebop will truly stand the test of time for many years to come.
Heavily influenced by jazz and western culture (as evidenced by the killer soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts) Cowboy Bebop is a match made in heaven for North America. It has one of the best English Dubs around (as these downloads are the dubs), as well as one of the most iconic opening sequences in anime.
